Mr. Robert Lee Thomas was the fourth of ten children born December 1, 1931, in Jackson, Mississippi to the late Sampson and Ethel M. Thomas. At an early age, Robert joined and was baptized at Mount Helm Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend A.L. Rice. He attended Smith Robertson Elementary School. Upon completing his elementary School education, he attended Lanier High School. With his high school education completed, he enrolled and completed two years in the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
Robert was married and later divorced many years ago. There were no children born to this union. Once Robert completed his service in the army, he, like his dad, became a cement finisher by trade. The two of them worked on many jobs together and established many "firsts", such as black men working on tall buildings.
Robert was an avid reader. He enjoyed learning about herbs and spices and the positive effects some have on the body. He shared this information with his family and anyone who was interested in learning about natural medicines.
Robert was a man who loved life and exercised even when he was confined to home. Indeed he was an inspiration to his family and friends, a well-read and learned man. From a child, he knew Jesus Christ as his personal savior. While confined at home, he read and studied the Bible and meditated daily. He enjoyed gospel service on television.
Robert enjoyed such hobbies as painting intricate design, listening to his police scanner, and watching sports on television. In his youth, he taught homing pigeons to carry messages, and he was ping-pong champion around town. He was very protective of his younger siblings. He made toys for them and taught them to make several toys on their own.
