Mrs. Naomi Fields Sams of Jackson, Mississippi completed her life's journey of 89 years on Saturday, June 22, 2019, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Naomi began an incredible journey of life on January 22, 1930, in Lowndes County, Mississippi. She was one of three children born to the late Henry Fields and Rosa Harris Fields. The formative years of Naomi's life were spent in Columbus, Mississippi. She matriculated through the Meridian/Lauderdale County School System. Naomi attended and graduated from Jackson State University (Jackson college) in 1951 with a degree in music education.

Naomi and her late husband, Jimmie Sams, were united in holy matrimony on December 17, 1955, at Farish Street Baptist Church, and to this union, one daughter was born.

Naomi was an extraordinary music educator who demanded excellence from her students and her church choir members. Teaching on the secondary level, she enjoyed a stellar career as a part of a dynamic group of excellent teachers at Lanier High School. She took her choral music students to new heights, winning numerous awards on the local, state and national levels. Year after year, her choirs were forces to be reckoned with in competitions. she devoted thirty-three years to educating students in music (1952-1985). Additionally, she consistently demonstrated her unwavering love and devotion for her Lanier High School Bulldogs (833).

After retiring from the school system, Naomi joined the music ministry at Central United Methodist Church. However, after a few years, she decided to join the music ministry at Mount Helm Missionary Baptist Church, working with the late Reverend Calvin Thomas who spent many years as the organist. she continued the tradition of producing outstanding Easter and Christmas Cantatas. There is no doubt that if you were blessed to be a member of any choir directed by Naomi Sams or if you heard any musical performances presented by her choirs, you were touched by the joyous, majestic sounds.

My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise Psalm 57:7
