Mrs. Lola Mae Stevens was born to the union of Jeff and Clara Stevens on January 22, 1924, in Jackson, MS. Affectionately known to many as "Granny," Lola gained her heavenly wings at the age of 94, on July 29, 2018, after a brief illness.
She formally professed her love for Christ at the age of 12, and recently gained the distinction of being recognized as the longest serving oldest member in the Farish Street Baptist Church congregation. Lola loved her church and actively served in numerous capacities of mission leadership. She was a member of the Junior Matrons, Young Matrons, E.B. Topp Circle, Woman's Missionary Society, program committee, usher, advisor to the Junior Matron's Auxiliary, served on the Food Share Outreach Ministry committee, the Senior Outreach Ministry and the Bereavement Committee. In 2001, she was named the recipient of the Sadie Hendricks/Rosie Mitchell Woman of the Year Award at Farish Street Baptist Church.
Lola was a proud alumna of the Jackson Public School District and was crowned Miss Lanier in 1941. Following her graduation, Lola began a long and distinguished career as a seamstress of custom designs and alterations. Her career as a seamstress was more than a vocation, as her expertise and skills were quite well known, making her the seamstress to the stars. Subsequent to her retirement from McRae's Department Store, Lola continued to sew and alter clothes for friends and family until her death. Her talent and creativity did not go unnoticed, as she was the seamstress of choice for many in the Jackson area.
In addition to serving, she enjoyed cooking, Sudoku, spending time with her family, and participating in church activities and missionary groups. She will be remembered for her straight talk, giving spirit, determination, perseverance, and unwavering faith.
Lola married W. L. Weakley and reared four children together; however, Lola assumed the role of a single parent and strong matriarch until her transition. Lola was preceded in death by her parents, brother Jeff Stevens, and grandson Barry Stevens.
Visitation hours will be held on Thursday, August 2, 2018, between the hours of 12-5 p.m. at Peoples Funeral. Home, Wake service will be 5-7 p.m. Peoples Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 3, 2018, at Farish Street Baptist Church at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Garden Memorial Cemetery-Jackson, MS.
